Constructed in the Niagara Artists Centre's cavernous Main Space gallery, Hatchery, a new installation by Rob Elliott, is a site-specific installation, using light, sound and movement. The installation, part ice fishing shack, part expo pavilion, will engage engage issues of ecology, tourism, sporting life, Canadian Nationalism and extinction. In broad strokes, the project addresses monocultures, both ecological and human. The Niagara Artists Centre, with its tradition of artists exploring fishing themes, is an ideal location to debut this new work. St. Catharine's location, near Niagara Falls and wedged between the Great Lakes, also supplies a strong resonating effect with Hatchery's themes. Reception and Artist's Talk: Saturday, January 26, 8 p.m. Hatchery will be on view from January 19 to March 1, 2008. |
